เอาแต่ + verb = Only … all the time

What you will learn:
In the following video you will hear the pattern เอาแต่ + verb a lot. This pattern is used to describe someone who keeps doing something repeatedly, usually in a negative or critical way. It’s similar to saying “only … all the time,” “always just …,” or “keeps on …” in English.

Easy examples:

  1. เขาเอาแต่เล่นเกม
    He just keeps playing games / He only plays games.

  2. เขาเอาแต่บ่นทั้งวัน
    She keeps complaining all day.

  3. พวกเขาเอาแต่โทษคนอื่น
    They always blame others / They keep blaming other people.

  4. เด็กเอาแต่นั่งดูมือถือ
    The kid just sits and watches the phone all the time.

Vocabulary you might not know:

  1. พระราชินี = queen

  2. พรหมจรรย์ = virgin

  3. คนจิตใจสูง = a noble-hearted person

  4. ทำตัวแข็งแกร่ง = act tough/strong

  5. พยักหน้า = to nod

  6. เสนอ = to suggest

→ As time passed, the queen kept thinking that Snow White was more beautiful than her.

4. นางก็เอาแต่บอกว่าไม่ฉันจะเป็นพรหมจรรย์ไปจนตาย
→ She kept insisting, “No, I’ll stay a virgin until I die.”

5. เอาแต่ท่องว่าตัวเองเป็นคนจิตใจสูง
→ He kept reciting to himself that he was a noble-hearted person.

6. เอาแต่รอให้เขาทำให้ตลอดเวลา
→ She just keeps waiting for him to do for her all the time.

7. ตลอดเวลาที่นั่งอยู่ผมเอาแต่อายไม่กล้าพูดกับเธอสักคำ
→ The whole time I was sitting there, I was just shy. I didn't dare say a single word to her.

8. ถ้าคุณเอาแต่ทำตัวแข็งแกร่งตลอดเวลา...
→ If you keep acting tough all the time…

9. เจสเอาแต่พยักหน้าเวลาเขาเสนอว่าเธอจะกินอะไร
→ Jess just keeps nodding whenever he suggests what she should eat.

10. ทินหันไปบอกเพื่อนของตัวเองที่เอาแต่เกาะแขนของเขาไว้แน่นด้วยความกลัว
→ Tin turned and told his friend, who kept clinging tightly to his arm in fear.

11. เอมม่าเอาแต่มองหิมะ
→ Emma keeps staring at the snow.

12. เฮ้ยเจมส์พักบ้างนะโว้ย เอาแต่ทำงานแบบนี้เงินมึงจะใช้หมดหรอวะ
→ Hey James! Rest a bit, man. You keep working like this, will you be able to use all your money?
